Actress Koena Mitra has expressed profound grief over the sudden demise of director Sanjay Gupta, whom she fondly remembered as her ‘mentor’ and the filmmaker who launched her in Bollywood with the 2004 action-thriller ‘Musafir’.
Gupta, known for his distinctive style in action and crime dramas, passed away at the age of 57, leaving a void in the industry.
Mitra, who gained significant recognition for her memorable performance in the iconic ‘O Saki Saki’ track from ‘Musafir’, shared a heartfelt tribute on social media. She recalled Gupta as an intensely passionate and demanding director, whose vision pushed artists to excel. “A magician behind the camera, a maverick with a vision, and a man who lived every moment with an almost childlike enthusiasm,” she wrote, highlighting his infectious smile, ‘pro-max passion’, and ‘uncompromising eye for perfection’.
She acknowledged his demanding nature, stating, “Demanding, yes, sometimes impossibly so, but every demand had a purpose. He pushed you, challenged you and somehow made everything around him better.” Mitra emphasized the deep personal connection they shared, reminiscing about their film, laughter, and ‘wonderful moments’ she will cherish. The actress expressed her heartbreak at the loss of such a vibrant and gifted individual at a relatively young age.
Koena Mitra concluded her tribute by reiterating that the film industry has lost a visionary, and she, personally, has lost a mentor, a friend, and a pivotal figure in her journey. “Thank you for believing in me, for giving me my Bollywood beginning, and for being unapologetically YOU,” she wrote, adding, “You may be gone, but the magic you created, the memories we shared and the mark you left on my life will remain forever. Rest in peace, my dear Gups, You will be missed beyond words.”
