The Indian Navy’s First Training Squadron (1TS), comprising INS Tir, INS Sujata, and Indian Coast Guard Ship Sarathi, recently departed Colombo, Sri Lanka, after a productive port call.
This visit, which concluded on Thursday, October 29, 2026, focused on strengthening maritime cooperation and enhancing interoperability between India and Sri Lanka.
The port call featured a range of bilateral engagements, including training interactions, community outreach activities, and professional discussions. A significant highlight was the ‘Passage Exercise’ (PASSEX) conducted at sea with the Sri Lankan Navy ship SLNS Nandimithra, aimed at refining operational coordination between the two navies.
During their stay, the Senior Officer of the First Training Squadron met with the Commander of the Western Naval Area of the Sri Lanka Navy, reaffirming the strong bilateral ties. Trainees from both navies engaged in reciprocal visits, with Indian sea trainees visiting the Naval and Maritime Academy in Trincomalee and Sri Lankan cadets touring the Indian squadron’s ships. These interactions fostered professional camaraderie and shared learning.
Community outreach efforts included Indian Navy personnel participating in a beach clean-up, promoting environmental sustainability. The ships were also open to the public, allowing locals and the Indian diaspora to learn about the Indian Navy’s operations and training. This visit underscores the enduring maritime partnership between India and Sri Lanka, aligning with the MAHASAGAR vision for regional security and growth. Earlier, the squadron had also completed a similar port call and PASSEX in MalĂ©, Maldives.
