Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Brussels in December to formally sign the landmark India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
This significant step aims to bolster economic ties between India and the EU, as confirmed by European Council President Antonio Costa.
Costa, speaking at an event in Canada, announced that PM Modi’s visit would occur shortly before a European leaders’ meeting scheduled for December 17. The FTA, which concluded negotiations earlier this year, is poised to create a massive market encompassing over two billion people and a quarter of the global economy. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had indicated that the agreement could become operational within four to five months post-signing.
This agreement marks a historic milestone in India-EU economic relations, positioning both as trusted partners committed to open markets and inclusive growth. The EU is one of India’s largest trading partners, with bilateral trade in goods and services steadily increasing. In 2024-25, India’s trade with the EU reached significant figures, highlighting the deep economic interdependence. The FTA promises unprecedented market access for over 99% of Indian exports to the EU, supporting the ‘Make in India’ initiative and unlocking high-value commitments in services, alongside a comprehensive mobility framework for skilled Indian professionals.
