Mumbai Indians part ways With Malinga, Mhambrey and Hopkinson in coaching overhaul

Mumbai Indians continued with their internal overhaul, parting ways with bowling coaches Lasith Malinga and Paras Mhambrey besides fielding coach Carl Hopkinson, the franchise announced on Thursday.

Last season’s head coach Mahela Jaywardene has already been shown the door with Kieron Pollard taking his place. Former India fielding coach T. Dilip is expected to join Mumbai Indians in the same capacity.

Malinga had joined Mumbai in October 2023 ahead of IPL 2024, while Mhambrey and Hopkinson came on board ahead of the 2025 season. This was Mhambrey’s second stint with the side, having been with them from 2010 to 2017.

“Lasith Malinga has been an integral part of the Mumbai Indians family and one of the most iconic figures in the franchise’s history,” the franchise said.

Mumbai Indians were the first team to win the IPL five times – in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 – but have not qualified for the final in the last six seasons. They finished ninth out of 10 teams in IPL 2026.

The deadline for teams to release and retain players is November 15. There is still no clarity on Hardik Pandya’s continuance in the franchise though it is expected that Tilak Varma will be promoted to the leadership role.

A possible trade involving Rajasthan Royals’ Yashasvi Jaiswal and another player
for Pandya has been in the pipeline.
