Devoleena Bhattacharjee, a well-known actress from the small screen, recently expressed her views on and those who celebrate it. On Thursday, she took to platform X to share a heartfelt note regarding the festival.
In her message, she wished all the beautiful women observing Karva Chauth a happy celebration. Devoleena mentioned that she has never observed the fast herself, as it is not a tradition in Bengali and Assamese cultures. However, she acknowledged that while her culture may lack certain rituals, they celebrate many festivals with enthusiasm, questioning why Karva Chauth should be any different.
She candidly admitted that she sometimes feels the urge to participate but fears how she would manage without water for an entire day. “I fast on Mondays and occasionally on Ekadashi, but fasting without water is a whole different ball game,” she wrote.
Devoleena highlighted that for many couples, this festival is a beautiful expression of love. She has witnessed women joyfully celebrating, and noted that many men also join their wives in observing the fast. She criticized the tendency to introduce feminism, patriarchy, and judgment into others’ celebrations. “If you don’t believe in it, then don’t celebrate,” she said.
She emphasized that no one should be judged for their choices, and that it is wrong to spoil someone else’s happiness. Devoleena pointed out that mothers fast for their children and families, so if a woman chooses to fast for her husband, there should be no issue, provided it is a personal decision made without pressure.
Sharing a personal anecdote, she mentioned that her partner comes from a Muslim family, yet they ask her every year if she will observe the fast. “Every year, I respond with a heavy heart, saying we’ll see about next year,” she shared.
Currently breastfeeding her child, she hopes to participate next year, acknowledging that husbands also deserve to feel loved. She questioned why fasting for a husband suddenly brings up issues of patriarchy and feminism, when women already practice intermittent fasting and various diet plans.
“Ladies, let’s take it easy. Love is personal. Traditions are personal. Celebrations are personal. Let people choose what brings them joy,” she concluded.
