Neelam Sirohi Creates History, Wins Silver At World Wrestling Championships

ndian wrestler Neelam Sirohi won a silver medal in the women’s 50kg category at the 2026 World Wrestling Championships. She suffered a loss at the hands of Japan’s Yui Susaki in the final on Wednesday.

Neelam was pinned by the Tokyo Olympics gold medallist just before the end of the first period, as Susaki secured her fifth world title. The 26-year-old’s remarkable run made her only the second Indian woman, after Anshu Malik in 2021, to win silver at the senior World Championships. Neelam had stormed into the final with a 7-3 semifinal victory over Kazakhstan’s Zeinep Bayanova. Her achievement also marked a landmark edition for Indian women’s wrestling, with two Indian women reaching the gold-medal bouts for the first time, alongside Kajal Dhochak in the 76kg category.
