India secured a remarkable victory over New Zealand on Tuesday, chasing down a target of 199 runs in just 13.2 overs.
The standout performances came from openers Abhishek Sharma and Vaibhav Suryawanshi, who left the Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner in awe at the Henry Stadium.
Sharma’s explosive innings of 113 runs off 38 balls, coupled with Suryawanshi’s quickfire 45 runs from just 19 deliveries, propelled India to victory with six wickets remaining. The duo formed a formidable partnership, amassing 133 runs, and set a new record by scoring 118 runs during the powerplay.
After the match, Santner acknowledged the challenge of stopping Sharma and Suryawanshi when they are in form. Speaking to broadcasters, he remarked, “When these players are on song, it’s quite difficult to contain them. We’ve seen this before; we witnessed it in the IPL, and tonight in New Zealand, we saw the same display.”
In this series, India won the toss for the third consecutive time and opted to bowl first. Santner believed his team had set a competitive score, praising Indian bowlers for their performance in the latter stages of the innings.
He stated, “Yes, I think we got off to a decent start with the bat. We lost the toss again, but the partnership between Daryl and BJ helped us reach 200 runs, which is a good score on this pitch. They bowled very well in the final overs, delivering accurate yorkers that created difficulties for us. Overall, I’m quite pleased. We knew it was a good pitch.”
Santner also noted that the dew made it challenging for New Zealand to defend their total. He commended the Indian batsmen for demonstrating effective batting techniques during the powerplay, emphasizing its critical role in the game.
Despite the loss, New Zealand can take away positive aspects from the match, especially as various players have stepped up during the series. Glenn Phillips scored 82* and 70 in the first two matches, while Daryl Mitchell achieved his career-best score of 89* in the third match.
Santner concluded, “Yes, we’ve seen players play significant innings once they settle in – like Glenn did last night and Daryl today. Our batting is in good rhythm, and it’s always encouraging when different players take responsibility. The confidence among players is growing, which is a positive sign. We know where to score against these bowlers, as defending a total here is quite challenging.”
