Bollywood actor Imran Khan received significant interim relief from the Bombay High Court on Tuesday. The court temporarily halted the ‘Leave India’ notice issued against him by the Central government.
A division bench, addressing Khan’s challenge to the notice, ruled that no forceful action should be taken against him until the next hearing. The court also suspended the notice, which had mandated the actor to leave India by October 28.
The Additional Solicitor General (ASG), representing the Centre, sought an adjournment until next week and verbally assured the court that no punitive measures would be initiated against Khan in the interim.
Considering these submissions, the court scheduled the next hearing for November 2 at 3 p.m., granting the actor interim protection by keeping the notice in abeyance until then.
This controversy arose after a notice was issued to Khan following his participation in a protest demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Authorities alleged Khan violated the Foreigners Act by engaging in a political demonstration despite not being an Indian citizen. Khan, holding Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status, argued the order was arbitrary and lacked due process.
