New Delhi: Ugandan MP Joel Ssenyonyi has strongly advocated for legislative bodies to prioritize citizens’ needs, stating that all parliamentary actions—laws, budgets, and policies—must be ‘people-centric’.
Speaking at the 12th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in New Delhi, Ssenyonyi highlighted the immense global influence of BRICS, which accounts for 40% of global GDP and nearly half the world’s population.
Ssenyonyi praised India’s significant advancements, particularly in healthcare, noting that many Ugandans travel to India for medical treatment. He emphasized that international exchanges offer crucial insights for developing nations in areas like infrastructure and governance. The MP stressed the importance of accountability among global leaders, urging them to implement people-centric policies discussed at such high-level forums upon returning home.
He further added that international exposure helps leaders address critical issues like healthcare gaps and poverty in Africa by providing practical insights for meaningful reforms. The BRICS forum, attended by delegations from 11 member countries and 10 partner nations, aims to strengthen democratic values and citizen-centric development agendas. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla underscored the shared commitment to parliamentary cooperation rooted in dialogue and mutual respect within the BRICS framework.
