Electric Car Sales May 2026 – Tata, Mahindra, MG, Maruti, Hyundai, Kia

sales in the country seem to be picking up and we are witnessing a steady growth in EV segment. In FY26 sales charts, we saw an 83.63% YoY growth for this segment (collectively). A month before, we saw the segment perform well with 23,506 units sold and registered 75.14% YoY and 4.52% MoM growth.

The month of May 2026 followed a similar pattern as its preceding month as India’s electric car segment collectively sold 26,682 units in total registering a stellar 81.2% YoY and 2% MoM growth over the 14,725 units sold in May 2025 and 26,160 units sold in April 2026. The volume gain registered by the segment was 11,957 units YoY and 522 units MoM.

Breaking down these numbers further, we can see that within the electric car manufacturers, it is Tata Motors with the highest contribution and took the number 1 position with 38.75% market share, up from 35.56% a month before. Tata sold 10,340 electric cars last month, which is more than double than the 5,083 units sold in May 2025, yielding a 103.42% YoY growth.

When compared to the 9,302 units sold in  ,Tata saw 11.16% MoM growth. In terms of volume, Tata gained 5,257 units in volume YoY and 1,038 units MoM. Tata Motors is reaping these rewards of being the segment-leader because the company invested into EVs at a large scale before everyone else.

Sidelining JSW MG Motors, we have Mahindra Auto in 2nd place with 6,210 units which is more than double the 2,891 units sold last year and registered 114.8% YoY growth and 6.66% MoM growth, gaining 3,319 units in volume YoY and 388 units MoM. JSW MG Motor took 3rd place with 4,984 units sold. The maker of Windsor EV saw 8.37% YoY growth and a 8.04% MoM decline.

Maruti eVitara sold 1,591 units last month and saw 19.53% MoM growth over 1,331 units sold in April 2026 with 260 units gained in volume. Vinfast has been expanding its presence in the country and the Vietnamese brand sold 1,238 units with 4.11% MoM decline. BYD, on the other hand, has boarded the growth train as the brand registered 10.47% YoY and 25.41% MoM growth with volume growth of 65 units YoY and 139 units MoM.

Citroen sold less EVs than BMW, Mercedes, BYD, Volvo

Hyundai’s Creta EV seems to be on a downward spiral in terms of sales as it fell into the red completely with 460 units sold, 36.02% YoY and 17.56% MoM decline. In 8th place, we have BMW with 352 electric luxury cars sold registering 75.12% YoY and 1.15% MoM growth. Mercedes in 10th place followed a similar trend with 208 luxury EVs sold and saw 70.49% YoY and 76.27% MoM growth.

Kia India’s EV sales blew out of proportion from 41 units last year to 349 units yielding 751.22% YoY growth and 13.4% MoM decline. With 35 units sold, Tesla saw sales drop by 18.6% MoM. Volvo sold 29 EVs last month and it was interesting to see a mainstream brand like Citroen below luxury EV brands as it sold 22 units of eC3, which is about to get an update in the form of eC3 X. Other vehicles combined, sold 178 units.
