The Tata Altroz has surpassed the 350,000-unit wholesales milestone in the Indian market. As per SIAM wholesales data, Tata Motors’ premium hatchback had clocked total sales of 349,185 units till the end of September 2026. Given that the Altroz had sold 8,853 units in the July-September 2026 quarter, or about 96 units a day, the minuscule gap of 815 units needed to reach 350,000 units would have been bridged in the first week of October 2026.
Since its launch over six years ago on January 22, 2020, the Tata Altroz, which is available with petrol, diesel and CNG powertrains, has contributed 10% to Tata Motors’ total passenger vehicle sales of 3.33 million units and 34% of its 1.03 million passenger car and sedan sales till September 2026.
Launched just before Covid-19 struck, the Tata Altroz has sold 349,185 units till the end of September 2026, with the remaining 815 units needed to achieve 350,000 sales having been dispatched in October’s first week.
Despite being launched just a couple of months before the Covid-19 pandemic struck, the Altroz managed to sell 60,379 units in FY2021 and 62,247 units in FY2022. Sales fell 7% in FY2023 to 57,819 units, but FY2024 was the Altroz’s best fiscal year yet, with sales of 70,162 units, up 21% YoY, when it was the second best-selling hatchback for Tata Motors after the Tiago (85,478 units). This also made the Altroz the eighth best-selling passenger car model in India in FY2024, improving upon its No. 9 ranking in FY2023.
However, in FY2025, demand fell sharply by 50% to 35,187 units, as sales of its siblings Tiago (69,222 units, down 19%) and the Tigor (16,509 units, down 38%) also declined. In FY2025, Tata Motors’ passenger car sales fell 34% YoY to 120,918 units (FY2024: 182,537 units) but grew by 10% in FY2026 to 133,335 units, with the Altroz contributing 38,153 units and a 29% share.
In the current fiscal’s first six months, Tata Motors sold 16,780 Altroz hatchbacks, down 20% YoY (H1 FY2026: 20,957 units). This gave the model a 26% share of the 63,591 passenger cars Tata Motors sold between April and September 2026. These included the Tiago hatchback (40,004 units, up 0.35% YoY), Tigor compact sedan (4,401 units, down 25% YoY) and the just-launched Aeris sedan (2,406 units), which replaces the Tigor.
The Tata Altroz is essentially a five-seat hatchback with a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating and a 345-litre boot, which is the largest in its class. It comes in 27 variants across seven trims and offers three fuel choices: an 88hp 1.2-litre petrol, a 90hp 1.5-litre diesel and a 74hp CNG version. Pricing for the Tata Altroz ranges from Rs 599,990 to Rs 10.74 lakh (ex-showroom) across the petrol, diesel and CNG variants, with manual, AMT and DCA options. Six airbags and the 5-star Bharat NCAP rating are standard across the range.
According to Autocar India, the Altroz’s ride and handling are key highlights because there is only slight firmness at low speeds, and the car absorbs potholes easily while staying composed as speeds rise. The steering gives a good sense of connection and needs very little effort at parking speeds, which is rare in this class of vehicle. Furthermore, the 345-litre boot is the largest in the class, and the CNG version still leaves 210 litres usable because the CNG system uses two slim tanks.
The Altroz has its share of firsts. It is the first Tata car to use the ALFA (Agile Light Flexible Advanced) architecture, was the 36th made-in-India car to be crash-tested by Global NCAP (under the previous protocol) and became the company’s second five-star-rated car after the Tata Nexon, as well as in January 2020. The Altroz CNG debuted the carmaker’s new dual-cylinder setup for CNG tanks and was, at the time, the first CNG-powered hatchback in India to feature a sunroof. It also remains one of the nicest-looking hatchbacks in India, both at a standstill and on the road.
