Faith, Patience, Victory: Hyderabad Duo Seals Sensational Chase in 2nd T20I

India’s young batters Tilak Varma and Nitish Kumar Reddy credited faith, patience and mutual trust after producing a match-winning partnership to defeat New Zealand by four wickets in the second T20 International at Hagley Oval on Saturday.

Chasing a target of 181, India recovered from a difficult position to reach 181 for six in 19.5 overs, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. The two Hyderabad-born players remained unbeaten to guide India home in a tense finish.

Tilak scored an unbeaten 51 off 26 deliveries, hitting six fours and a six, while Nitish contributed 26 not out from 13 balls. Their unbroken 69-run partnership for the seventh wicket transformed the chase after India had slipped to 70 for five in the 11th over. The pair combined sensible shot selection with quick running between the wickets before attacking the New Zealand bowlers when scoring opportunities emerged.

Reflecting on the victory, Tilak spoke about how the result came at the right time after the disappointment of India’s previous T20I against the West Indies in Hyderabad. The two batters had been involved in that unsuccessful chase as well, when India fell short while pursuing a target of 249. Tilak said the experience had reinforced the importance of continuing to work hard and trusting the process, adding that “God always has the right time for us” as he reflected on their comeback in Christchurch.

Nitish praised Tilak’s composure and ability to manage the chase, particularly when Naman Dhir was batting aggressively. He explained that Tilak allowed Dhir to play his natural game rather than taking unnecessary risks himself. After Dhir was dismissed for 31, Nitish and Tilak concentrated on keeping their partnership intact, rotating the strike and waiting for opportunities to put pressure on the bowlers.

Nitish also highlighted the importance of believing that one productive over could change the direction of a T20 match. The pair remained calm despite the demanding run rate, using their running between the wickets to collect twos and punishing loose deliveries for boundaries. Their late acceleration, including a productive 18th and 19th over, brought India back into contention and left the visitors needing 11 runs in the final over. Nitish struck the winning runs to complete the comeback.

Earlier, New Zealand had recovered from a shaky start to post 180 for five, with Glenn Phillips scoring 70 and Bevon Jacobs contributing 58. India’s bowlers, including Arshdeep Singh, had taken early wickets, but the hosts built a substantial fourth-wicket partnership. Mitchell Santner then claimed four wickets for 21 runs to put India under pressure during the chase. India’s victory, secured with one ball remaining, gives the team a commanding series advantage ahead of the third T20I in Wellington on October 27.
