At the age of 20, Umesh made his debut in first-class cricket for Vidarbha, transitioning from tennis ball cricket to the red SG Test ball. He made an impressive start by taking four wickets for 72 runs against in his first match. During his debut season in 2008-09, he claimed 20 wickets at an average of 14.60 in just four matches.

Over four seasons, he took a total of 31 wickets for the team, later playing for Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Titans.
He made his ODI debut for India on May 28, 2010, followed by his T20 debut on August 7, 2012, and his Test debut in November 2011. Umesh quickly made his mark, taking nine wickets in his first two Test matches, which earned him a spot on the tour to Australia. Despite a challenging series for the team, Umesh stood out by taking 14 wickets across four Tests.
In the 2015 Cricket , Umesh was a leading bowler for India, claiming 18 wickets at an average of 17.83, ranking third for the most wickets in the tournament.
Umesh has proven to be a formidable force on home pitches, achieving 170 wickets in 57 Test matches at an average of 30.95, and 106 wickets in 75 ODIs. In T20s, he has taken 12 wickets in nine matches. Overall, he has played 126 first-class matches, taking 387 wickets, and has participated in 148 IPL matches, securing 144 wickets.
