Kieron Pollard, the former West Indies all-rounder, has been appointed as the head coach of Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
This promotion comes after Pollard’s previous roles as a player and batting coach, succeeding Mahela Jayawardene.
Jayawardene resigned from his position following a lackluster performance in IPL 2026, where the team finished ninth with only four victories out of ten matches. This prompted the franchise to revamp its coaching staff.
Pollard’s long-standing relationship with the Mumbai Indians began in 2010, making him a key player in the team’s history. After retiring from playing, he transitioned to a coaching role, ultimately leading to his current position.
Pollard’s Legacy with Mumbai Indians
Since joining the franchise in 2010, Pollard has become one of the most formidable finishers in T20 cricket. His contributions have been pivotal in securing five IPL titles for the team in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020.
Expressing his excitement about the new role, Pollard stated that he feels honored to lead the team where he spent significant years of his career. He emphasized his dedication to fostering a winning culture and collaborating closely with the players as they prepare for IPL 2027.
“Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what Mumbai Indians stands for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold,” Pollard remarked in a statement.
Pollard’s Ongoing Playing Commitments
Pollard’s extensive 16-year tenure with the Mumbai Indians has equipped him with a deep understanding of the franchise’s values. He is currently involved with MI’s sister franchises, MI New York and MI Emirates, and has participated in two seasons of SA20 with MI Cape Town.
However, his appointment has sparked discussions online due to his active playing commitments with Joburg Super Kings (JSK), a franchise associated with Chennai Super Kings, MI’s traditional rival.
Fan Reactions to Pollard’s Appointment
The cricket community has reacted to Pollard’s dual role, with some fans expressing support while others raised concerns about the implications of having a head coach also playing for a rival team. Many took to social media to share their thoughts on this unusual situation.
Some fans welcomed Pollard’s promotion, citing his extensive knowledge of the team, while others questioned the decision, highlighting the irony of his connection to a competing franchise.
Pollard’s Impressive Career Stats
Kieron Pollard is celebrated as one of the greatest T20 players, having scored 14,999 runs, including two centuries and 71 fifties, with an average of 31.71 across 754 matches. In the IPL, he has accumulated 3,412 runs, featuring 16 fifties, with an average of 28.67 in 189 matches.
