Sri Lanka Create History With 430 Chase VS England; Move Past India; Achieve Unprecedented First In ODI History

India’s feat of securing the second-highest run-chase in ODI cricket lasted just 22 days as Sri Lanka created history at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday (October 22) at they defeated England in the third match of the ongoing tri-series which also involved Pakistan by completing a massive chase of 430 runs with one ball to spare to register their first victory in the competition.

England captain Harry Brook scored a remarkable double hundred (202 in 116 balls) to help the 2019 World Champions post 429 on the board. However, the Asian Giants put up a performance to remember to complete their highest successful chase in ODI cricket history. Avishka Fernando (97 off 83), Pavan Rathnayake (130 off 106), Dasun Shanaka (97 off 50), Janith Liyanage (61 off 27) were the stars of the show.

Sri Lanka Creates History

Only South Africa’s historic chase of 435 against Australia in epic clash at Johannesburg in 2006 stands above the total chased by the 1996 World Champions today. Quite incredibly till last month, it was the only instance of a 400+ score being chased in ODI cricket history but over the last 23 days, it has been done twice.

Highest Successful Targets Chased In ODIs

Team Opponent Target Chased Venue Year
South Africa Australia 435 Johannesburg 2006
Sri Lanka England 430 Rawalpindi 2026
India West Indies 406 Guwahati 2026
South Africa Australia 372 Durban 2016
Netherlands Scotland 370 Dundee 2025

Sri Lanka are the first team to chase a total above 400 in an ODI away from their home country. Meanwhile, they have also become the first-ever side to register a second innings total of 400 twice in an ODI game. The first instance came in 2009 when they scored 411 against India at Rajkot but lost by three runs. That remains the only time a team has scored over 400 runs in a chase but lost.

Sri Lanka also broke a 20-year-old record for their own highest successful chase in ODI cricket history. Their previous effort came in 2006 at Leeds against England when they chased 324.

Meanwhile, a total of 859 runs were made in this match, the second-highest aggregate in an ODI behind the South Africa-Australia clash, where 872 runs were made.
