Halfway into FY2027, the compact SUV category continues to register the same momentum it displayed in FY2026 when it sold a record 1.47 million units. The difference though is that with 813,657 compact SUVs sold in April-September 2026, the YoY growth is a robust 28 percent.
In H1 FY2027, the overall 1.78 million utility vehicle (UV) segment commanded a 67% share of the 2.63 million passenger vehicles sold. Within the UV category, which comprises compact SUVs, midsize SUVs and MPVs, the compact SUV sub-segment remains the most popular although consumer demand for midsize SUVs has risen rapidly over the past year.

Compact SUVs (813,657 units) contributed 45% to record UV dispatches of 17,83,535 units in H1 FY2027. However, rising demand for midsize SUVs sees their share dip to 46% from 47% a year ago.
Fiscal half-year stats (above) reveal the key role compact SUVS have played in accelerating overall sales of the UV segment per se. From 328,241 units and a 33% share of total UV sales in H1 FY2022 to 813,657 units and a 45% share of UV sales in H1 FY2027, it’s been a stellar drive.
The compact SUV category has 11 manufacturers, which market 22 models — a fourth of the around-80 utility vehicles sold in India. However, given the recent advance of the midsize SUV category, they have a fight on their hands. The compact SUV share of the overall UV pie has reduced from a high of 50% in H1 FY2024 to 45.62% in H1 FY2027, the lowest in the past four fiscals.
The Top 10 models in H1 FY2027 – Tata Punch and Nexon, Maruti Fronx and Brezza, Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra 3XO and Bolero, Hyundai Exter and Mahindra Thar (3-door) – with sales of 727,773 units and 30% YoY growth dominate. This popular lot accounted for 89% of the 813,657 units sold in the past six months.

Tata Punch, sold with petrol, CNG and electric powertrains, sold 123,287 units, up 68% YoY, and accounted for 52% of Tata Motors’ 235,206 compact SUV sales. It is currently India’s No. 1 SUV too.
Tata Punch is India’s Best-Selling SUV in First Half of FY2027
First-half FY2027 has seen Tata Motors, which is the No. 2 passenger vehicle OEM after Maruti Suzuki and ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra, increase its grip on the compact SUV market. As per SIAM’s wholesale numbers, the manufacturer sold 235,206 units, up 44% YoY, comprising the Punch (123,287 units, up 68% YoY) and the Nexon (111,919 units, up 25% YoY).
These two siblings give Tata Motors a 29% share of the compact SUV segment, up three percentage points from the 26% they had in H1 FY2026. While the Punch (123,287 units, up 68% YoY) is India’s best-selling SUV/UV in the current fiscal, the Nexon is ranked second in its category and is the third highest-selling UV after the Maruti Ertiga MPV (112,557 units).
What continues to drive numbers for these two models is Tata’s multi-powertrain strategy spread across petrol, diesel, CNG and electric power. The company is also benefiting from the ongoing consumer shift to EVs due to the recent (from May 14 onwards) increase in petrol, diesel and CNG prices.

Tata Motors continues to dominate the compact SUV market with 235,206 units, 44% growth and a 29% share. Maruti Suzuki (193,872 units) and Mahindra (130,262 units) are next on the podium.
Maruti Suzuki, the overall UV segment leader with 455,692 units, sold 193,872 compact SUVs in H1 FY2027. Its sales comprise the Fronx (110,135 units, up 43%), Brezza (80,516 units, down 5%) and Jimny (3,221 units, up 17%). Brezza numbers are down mainly due to the 20% decline in Q1 FY2027 as buyers delayed their purchase to July and beyond when the new Brezza was launched. This has impacted Maruti Suzuki’s share of the compact SUV market which at 24%is down from the 26% it had in H1 FY2026.
Mahindra & Mahindra, whose portfolio in the compact SUV category comprises the Bolero, Thar 3-door, XUV 3X0 and XUV400, clocked sales of 130,262 units, up 25% YoY. Three of its models are in the Top 10 list – the 3XO (52,851 units, up 19%), Bolero (51,720 units, up 30%) and the three-door Thar (25,424 units, up 34%). This performance gives M&M a 16% segment share.
Fourth-ranked Hyundai Motor India has seen strong gains in Q1. The 114,992 units, comprising the Venue (68,836 units, up 38%) and the Exter (46,156 units, up 40%), represent a 39% YoY increase (H1 FY2026: 82,945 units). This sees Hyundai’s compact SUV share rise to 14% from 13% in the year-ago period.
Kia India, which has two compact SUVs in the Sonet and Syros, dispatched 64,127 units in the first half of the current fiscal. This marks a 17% YoY increase (H1 FY2026: 54,795 units), which is the result of one model’s strong sales buffering the other. While the Sonet (56,929 units) has registered 21% YoY growth, the Syros (7,198 units) has witnessed a 6% YoY sales decline compared to the 7,627 units sold in H1 FY2026. As a result, the company’s compact SUV share is marginally down to 8% from 9% a year ago. With Kia India receiving a good market response to the Syros EV, which has an ARAI-certified range of 526km and offered with BaaS as a sales option, the Syros will enter positive territory in Q3 FY2027.
Sixth-ranked Skoda Auto India is among the three OEMs that have only a single compact SUV in their UV portfolio. The Kylaq, which was launched 21 months ago in January 2025, sold 23,014 units in the April-September 2026 period, down 3% YoY (H1 FY2026: 24,383 units). This sees Skoda’s compact SUV share slip to 3% from 4% a year ago. Since its launch, the Kylaq has sold 83,308 units in India and has helped re-energise the Czech OEM.
Nissan Motor India, which expanded its UV line-up with the new Gravite joining the Magnite, doubled its compact SUV wholesales in H1 to 17,704 units. With the Gravite adding over 8,500 units to Nissan’s compact SUV sales, the company’s segment share has risen to 2% from 1% a year ago.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor, which has a single product in this segment, sold 15,959 units of the Urban Cruiser Taisor, up 10% YoY (H1 FY2026: 14,531 units). This is enough to enable TKM to rise one rank YoY to No. 8 even as its 2% share of the compact SUV segment remains unchanged.

The Top 10 models accounted for 727,773 units or 89% of the 813,657 units sold in H1 FY2027. While Tata Motors, Maruti and Hyundai have two models each, Mahindra has three and Kia one in the list.
Renault India (14,382 units) is down 4% YoY (H1 FY2026: 14,998 units). While the Triber accounted for 10,719 units and flat sales (H1 FY2026: 10,677 units), the Kiger sold 3,663 units (down 15%).
While 10th-ranked Stellantis India’s H1 FY2027 sales of 4,138 units of the C3 and e-C3 were up 130% YoY, Force Motors sold one Gurkha in the past six months.
Compact SUVs Headed for Over 1.5 Million Sales in FY2027
H1 FY2027’s 813,657 compact SUVs are already 55% of the record FY2026 sales of 14,73,422 units. Given the high double-digit growth of 28% in the past six months, the ongoing festive season as well as the tailwinds for zero-emission compact SUVs, one can expect this popular SUV category to surpass the 1.5 million milestone for the first time in a fiscal in FY2027.
Will the Tata Punch, which is in the lead after the first six months of the current fiscal, maintain its current lead in the second half of FY2027 and regain the compact SUV crown as well as the title of India’s best-selling SUV it had in FY2025 and lost to sibling Nexon in FY2026? Or will the new Brezza, launched in July, spring a surprise? Stay tuned into Autocar Professional for the latest in number crunching and industry sales analysis.
