IND vs NZ 1st T20I Probable Playing XI: What Changes Can Team India Make For Christchurch Clash?

Senior fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar was denied the opportunity to bowl in his first T20I for India in over four years on Saturday, October 17. However, on Thursday, October 22, he will likely spearhead India’s fast-bowling attack in the opening T20I of the five-match series against New Zealand.

In the absence of Jasprit Bumrah, who has been rested for the five 20-over matches, Bhuvneshwar will most likely start India’s pace attack alongside left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, who is India’s highest wicket-taker in T20Is. The first game of India’s away series against the Black Caps is set to take place at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

India Aim For Good Start vs NZ

Prince Yadav and Mayank Yadav will compete for the third pacer position, with Prince likely to be selected ahead of his Delhi and Lucknow Super Giants teammate, while Bhuvneshwar and Arshdeep are guaranteed to start for the Men in Blue. It will be intriguing to watch if any of India’s two fast-bowling all-rounders, Shivam Dube and Nitish Kumar Reddy, can secure a spot in the starting lineup for the first game of the series.

Despite the favourable fast-bowling conditions in New Zealand, spin-bowling all-rounders Naman Dhir and Axar Patel, who played all five T20Is against the West Indies at home, are likely to hold onto their starting positions based on their recent performance and ability to contribute with the bat.

After missing the Asian Games and the West Indies assignment owing to injury, Varun Chakaravarthy is also returning to the Indian T20I team for the away series in New Zealand. The cricket player from Tamil Nadu has been India’s preferred spinner in T20Is for a considerable amount of time, and it is highly likely that he will surpass Kuldeep Yadav, who has 98 T20I wickets.

Unless there is an injury concern, the Indian team management is anticipated to stick with Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson as the opening pair. Despite making an impression with his batting in Japan, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who opened the innings for India at the Asian Games 2026, was not selected for any of the five T20Is against the Men in Maroon. He will probably also warm the bench in the opening T20I against the Kiwis.
