The Cinderella stepmom scandal: How Priya Sachdev Kapur allegedly hijacked Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore estate

New Delhi: In the high-stakes legal drama surrounding Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore estate, Karisma Kapoor’s children are fighting to claim their rightful inheritance. Accusing their stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur, of sidelining them, their lawyer, Mahesh Jethmalani, has likened her to the villainous “Cinderella stepmother.”

The battle, played out in the Delhi High Court, questions the legitimacy of the late businessman’s will and exposes allegations of forgery and asset diversion within a sprawling family feud. Dig in for more details.

Sunjay Kapur’s Rs 30,000 crore legal dispute

The ongoing inheritance dispute over the Rs 30,000 crore estate of businessman Sunjay Kapur has reached a dramatic point, with Karisma Kapoor’s children, Samaira and Kiaan, challenging the will presented by their stepmother, Priya Sachdev Kapur. Represented by senior advocate Mahesh Jethmalani, they have accused Priya of acting as a “Cinderella stepmother,” trying to restrict their shares while transferring assets to her own children.

Jethmalani told the Delhi High Court that Priya has already claimed about 60 per cent of the assets, 12 per cent for her son, and control of 75 per cent of the family trust. He alleged that the will, dated March 21, 2025, was a “manifestly forged document” with several “loopholes and infirmities.” The lawyer questioned how a man of Sunjay Kapur’s stature could have executed such a flawed will without consulting a lawyer, saying, “Forging a will is a serious offence punishable by life imprisonment”.

The lawyer detailed suspicious circumstances surrounding the will’s creation, including changes made while Sunjay was on holiday with his son and the appointment of a director to one of Sunjay’s companies just a day after his funeral. Jethmalani deemed these actions a breach of fiduciary duties and an attempt to exclude Karisma’s children from their rightful inheritance.

Defendants dismiss Karishma Kapoor’s will challenge

Despite these allegations, the defendants maintain that the will is legally valid. Notably, Karisma Kapoor herself remains outside direct claims but supports her children’s fight. The will was publicly read and acknowledged in a transparent setting at the Taj Mansingh Hotel, witnessed by Karisma’s legal counsel. This fact undermines allegations of forgery, as the document was formally disclosed and discussed.

The court has ordered Priya to submit a full declaration of all movable and immovable assets owned by Sunjay Kapur, with the next hearing scheduled for October 16, 2025. The proceedings continue to unfold as all parties seek a fair resolution to safeguard the interests of Sunjay Kapur’s family in this massive fortune.

This inheritance battle highlights the legal complexities and intense emotions involved in dividing a wealthy estate, with accusations of forgery, mistrust, and family discord at its core.
