New Delhi: Ayushmann Khurrana and Sara Ali Khan’s upcoming film Udta Teer will not be released in Nepal after the country’s Central Film Censorship Committee declined to approve it for public exhibition.
Nepal’s Department of Information and Broadcasting, under the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, communicated the decision through an official notice. The committee reached its decision after examining the Hindi-language film as part of the certification process.
The notice, sent to National Cine Group Nepal Pvt. Ltd., states that the film contains subject matter covered by the restrictions outlined in Section 5(3) of Nepal’s Film (Production, Exhibition and Distribution) Act, 2026 B.S.
A source close to the development told News9 Digital exclusively, “The Indo-Pak reference in the film is the issue that has been cited for denial of the certificate.”
A Nepali distributor, Pushpraj, told us, “The movie Udta Teer was rejected by the Nepal Censor Board due to concerns about its storyline. It reportedly portrays Pakistan negatively. The reason for the rejection is that Nepal’s film censorship policies restrict the release of movies that could be considered offensive or hostile toward neighbouring countries, as this may affect diplomatic relations. Therefore, the film was not approved for release in Nepal.”
As a result, the film cannot be exhibited in Nepali cinemas unless the authorities reverse their decision or grant the required approval through a subsequent review.
Although the notice refers to the relevant legal provision, it does not identify the specific portions of the film that prompted the rejection. There is also no indication in the communication about whether the distributor intends to challenge the decision or request reconsideration.
Directed by Aakash Kaushik, Udta Teer is a spy action-comedy built around an unusual case of mistaken identity. Its story follows a Pakistani intelligence agent who suffers memory loss and begins believing that he works for an Indian counter-terrorism agency. The narrative combines espionage and action with humour and political satire.
The film also stars Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Raghubir Yadav, Suhail Nayyar, Mukul Dev, Brijendra Kala and Supriya Pilgaonkar. Produced by Dharma Productions and Sikhya Entertainment, the film is scheduled to arrive in Indian cinemas on October 23.
While the film is preparing for its Indian theatrical release, its prospects in Nepal remain uncertain following the censorship committee’s refusal to issue screening permission.
