Why is Vijayadashami celebrated?

Vijayadashami, also known as Dussehra, is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil. The festival commemorates Lord Rama’s victory over Ravana, as described in the Ramayana, and symbolises the triumph of righteousness over wrongdoing.

The occasion is observed across India through religious ceremonies, cultural programmes, Ramlila performances and the traditional burning of effigies of Ravana, Meghnad and Kumbhakarna.

In several regions, Vijayadashami also marks the culmination of Durga Puja and commemorates Goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura.

Despite regional differences in customs and celebrations, the festival carries a common message of courage, integrity, truth and righteousness, encouraging people to overcome negativity and strengthen social harmony.
