Indian female boxer Neetu Ganghas has made a name for herself on the international stage. She clinched at both the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the World Championships.
However, her journey to these achievements has been fraught with challenges.
Born on October 19, 2000, in Bhiwani, Haryana, Neetu grew up in a region renowned for its boxing talent, home to legends like Vijender Singh. Her father, Jai Bhagwan, introduced her to the sport at a young age. Neetu began training at just 12 years old, but the path was not easy. Faced with numerous obstacles, she even considered quitting boxing.
Jai Bhagwan played a crucial role in her perseverance. He took a three-year unpaid leave from work to support her boxing career, even borrowing six lakh rupees to cover expenses. He personally managed Neetu’s training and diet, ensuring she had everything she needed to succeed.
A turning point in Neetu’s career came when renowned coach Jagdish Singh noticed her talent. She began training at a local boxing club, commuting 40 kilometers daily on a scooter with her father. In 2017, Neetu won a gold medal at the Youth International Boxing Championship, followed by victories in the Asian and Youth Championships in 2018. Although the COVID-19 pandemic posed challenges, she made a strong comeback.
In 2021, Neetu secured the title at the Senior National Championship. Her career reached new heights in 2022 during the Commonwealth Games trials when she faced her idol, Mary Kom. Despite Mary Kom’s knee injury, Neetu emerged victorious.
At the Commonwealth Games 2022, Neetu showcased her skills, winning another gold medal. Her success continued in 2023 at the Women’s World Championships, where she remained unbeaten and earned the title of world champion at just 22 years old. In recognition of her achievements, she received the Arjuna Award from the government in 2024.
