Raj Babbar’s Heartfelt Tribute
Veteran actor-politician Raj Babbar remembered his late wife and acclaimed actor Smita Patil on her 71st birth anniversary, recalling her exceptional talent, warmth and the lasting impact she left on Indian cinema. Remembering her as an artist with “rare sensitivity,” he spoke about how she brought a unique depth to every character she played. “Smita had a rare sensitivity. Though her journey was tragically brief, her artistry left an indelible imprint. She didn’t merely portray characters – she breathed life into their very souls,” he wrote.
Raj also spoke about missing her and remembered the qualities that made her special. Reflecting on their personal bond, he recalled her warmth and “extraordinary talent” while paying tribute to her on her birth anniversary. “I miss her. Her warmth, her extraordinary talent, and everything that made her so special. Remembering Smita Patil on her birth anniversary. Her legacy continues to inspire, move, and resonate across generations,” he added.
The actor further spoke about how Smita’s contribution to cinema continues to live on through her work and the people she touched. He said that although artists may no longer be physically present, their work allows a part of them to remain with audiences. “Artists leave this world when they are called – but Smita left behind a part of herself in every heart she touched,” he wrote.

A Look Back at Smita Patil’s Legacy
Smita Patil was one of the most prominent actors associated with India’s parallel cinema movement, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. Known for her powerful performances and ability to portray complex characters, she earned a special place in Indian cinema through films such as Manthan, Bazaar, Ardh Satya and Waaris.
Her career was cut short when she died in December 1986, just weeks after giving birth to her son, Prateik Babbar. She was only 31 at the time of her death.
In recognition of her contribution to Indian cinema, Smita was awarded the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth-highest civilian honour. Even decades after her death, her performances continue to be remembered by film lovers, with her work remaining an important part of discussions around parallel cinema and realistic acting in India.
One of her final film appearances was in Galiyon Ka Badshah, directed by Sher Jung Singh. The film featured an ensemble cast that included Raaj Kumar, Hema Malini, Mithun Chakraborty, Poonam Dhillon, Aruna Irani, Ranjeet, Danny Denzongpa, Om Shivpuri and Iftekhar, alongside Smita Patil. (ANI)
