A man in Ajmer found an unattended bag outside a college and handed it to police. It contained foreign currency worth Rs 9.48 lakh and a passport.
A morning walk in Rajasthan’s Ajmer turned into an unexpected discovery for one man when he spotted an unattended bag outside Sophia College. Instead of walking away or keeping it, he took the bag to the police station, where officers discovered a passport, important documents, and foreign currency estimated to be worth around Rs 9.48 lakh.
Rajesh Kumar, a resident of Bhopon Ka Bada in Ajmer, handed the bag over to the Civil Lines police station after finding it on the road.
During a search, police found several documents and multiple notes of foreign currency, prompting them to trace the owner using the information available inside.
The investigation revealed that the bag belonged to Saddam Alam, a manager at the State Bank of India in West Bengal who had travelled to Ajmer to offer prayers at the Ajmer Dargah.
According to the account of the incident, Alam was travelling in a tempo after visiting the shrine when his bag accidentally fell out. Unaware of where he had lost it, he was later contacted by police after they identified him through the documents found inside.
Police subsequently returned the bag and its contents to Alam. The recovered foreign currency included three 500-dinar notes, one 200-dinar note, eleven 100-dinar notes, and three 10-dinar notes, with the total value estimated at approximately Rs 9.48 lakh. His passport and other essential documents were also returned.
Relieved to have his belongings back, Alam expressed gratitude to the Rajasthan Police and the people of Ajmer.
Meanwhile, Kumar has been praised for choosing to hand over the valuable bag to authorities rather than keeping it, turning an ordinary morning walk into an example of honesty.
