Big relief for Mumbaikars: Electricity bill to zero! Is this really possible?
Do you know that now your electricity bill in Mumbai can be reduced to almost ‘zero’? No, this is not a scam. The Maharashtra government has launched a Self -Educated Maharashtra Residential Rooftop (Smart) Solar Scheme for the economically weaker sections, especially BPL (below poverty line), Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST) people. Under this scheme, selected consumers will get 90% -95% solar subsidy, so that they can get electricity almost free by applying solar panels in their homes.
How to benefit from smart solar scheme?
Under this scheme, 1 kW solar panel, which can generate about 120 units of electricity every month, can be imposed for about Rs 50,000. The expenses in this are divided into this way:
- Central Government: Rs 30,000
- State Government for BPL consumers: Rs 17,500
- Consumer will have to pay only Rs 2,500
- The subsidy for SC and ST consumers is Rs 45,000 and will have to pay only Rs 5,000. Other low power consumption people (BPL, SC/ST) will get a subsidy of Rs 40,000 and will pay only Rs 10,000.
Will this scheme really reduce the electricity bill to zero?
Yes! According to officials, about 5 lakh families will benefit from this scheme. This includes consumers with 1.5 lakh BPL families and less income consumed 3.5 lakh less power consumed. The budget of the scheme has been kept at Rs 655 crore, including Rs 330 crore for 2025-26 and Rs 325 crore for 2026-27.
Earning by selling extra electricity
After installing solar panels, consumers will not only get free electricity, but they can also earn by selling extra electricity. In addition, the government will bear the expenses of maintenance and repair for five years. The government has asked for priority to remote areas like Melghat, Nandurbar and Gadchiroli.
