Actor Ranvir Shorey has filed an official complaint with Mumbai Police after allegedly receiving death threats and being targeted through the disclosure of his personal information on social media amid heated online exchanges over political differences.
Shorey confirmed the development in a post on X on Tuesday, saying he had formally approached the police and was awaiting further action.
“Official complaint has been filed. Now it’s over to @MumbaiPolice. Thanks to everyone who has shown concern,” the actor wrote.
The complaint follows an earlier episode in which Shorey said he had been doxed on social media and received threats from people opposed to his ideological views. He had also thanked Mumbai Police for reaching out to him after the incident.
The actor’s online exchanges come amid escalating political tensions over alleged irregularities in India’s electoral system, particularly the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), a youth-led political movement, has been protesting against the revision exercise and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The group alleges that the process has disenfranchised millions of voters, while the Election Commission and the BJP have denied allegations of manipulation.
The agitation intensified in Delhi in October, with protests planned at Jantar Mantar prompting security restrictions. On October 10, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after arriving for a demonstration. They were released the following day, reportedly subject to conditions intended to maintain public peace for one year.
The movement has continued to demand electoral reforms and an independent inquiry into alleged irregularities in voter-list revisions.
The Supreme Court, during a special hearing on Sunday, reportedly addressed concerns relating to the protesters’ detention and the restoration of normal public transport services.
Shorey’s complaint brings the issue of online threats and the disclosure of personal information into focus as political disagreements spill over into social media exchanges. Mumbai Police’s response to the actor’s latest complaint was not detailed in the information available.
