India’s Test and ODI skipper Shubman Gill made history by being the only player in history to win the ICC Player of the Month award five times on Tuesday, October 13. The star right-hander scored 110 and 223 runs in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati, respectively, during his two ODI matches for India against the West Indies last month (in September).
Gill won the top prize by defeating competitors like Sikandar Raza of Zimbabwe and Abhishek Sharma of India.
Last month, Abhishek participated in three T20Is for India against Afghanistan in New Delhi and one against Japan in Sano. In three games against the Ibrahim Zadran-led team, he scored 82, 39, and 108, but in the inaugural T20 International between India and Japan, he was removed for a golden duck. In contrast, Raza hit 57, 45, and 81* in three ODIs against Australia in September. Furthermore, he also claimed three wickets.
Gill received his fifth ICC Men’s Player of the Month award on Tuesday. In January 2023, September 2023, February 2025, and July 2025, he was the ICC Player of the Month.
Before Gill, Sanju Samson was the last Indian to win ICC Player of the Month. Samson won the prize in March after scoring 97*, 89, and 89 in T20 World Cup 2026 matches against New Zealand, England, and the West Indies.
Shubman Gill On Winning The Award
“It feels fantastic to win my fifth ICC Player of the Month award, and I am grateful to the panel for this honour. It was immensely satisfying to score those runs, and it was even more special to be part of successful run chases in front of our home fans, whose support always gives us an extra boost,” Gill said in an release.
The also talked about how the game is evolving and how crucial it is to adjust to it.
“The pace of ODI cricket has gone up significantly, and you must think on your feet, assess the conditions quickly and adapt to the demands of the pitch,” he said.
“With the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in South Africa next year, we are determined to keep raising our standards and build a strong, well-rounded team capable of rising to the challenges ahead,” he added.
