Two of football’s greatest ever players, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, returned to club football with goals after an eventful international break, but the headlines surrounding the two football icons could hardly have been more different.
Messi celebrated his return to Inter Miami with a brace in a commanding 4-0 victory over DC United in the Major League Soccer (MLS), while Ronaldo found the net for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League amid continued fallout from his departure from Portugal’s national team camp. With their exploits on return from break, Messi took his career tally to 934 goals and 426 assists, while Ronaldo went ahead with 980 goals and 261 assists.
Messi’s first goal came in the 47th minute, when he latched onto Luis Suarez’s clipped cross, moved ahead of Lucas Bartlett and improvised a close-range finish.
His second goal was vintage Messi. Shrugging off a challenge outside the box, the Argentine drove forward, deceived Bartlett with a feint and calmly slotted home. Minutes earlier, a similar run had seen him carve through the defence before striking the far post.
Suarez also scored twice, with Messi contributing to the Uruguayan’s second goal. After a quick one-two inside the box, Messi’s shot was saved, and Germán Berterame headed the rebound into Suarez’s path for a tap-in.
Ronaldo dazzles for Al Nassr
Ronaldo, meanwhile, received strong support from Al Nassr fans on his return. He enthralled the crowds by opening the scoring against Al Diriyah, racing onto a rebound from Kingsley Coman’s effort and firing past the goalkeeper from close range.
Off the pitch, Ronaldo’s situation remains uncertain. The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) provisionally suspended him on October 10 after opening disciplinary proceedings following his departure from the national team camp.
“Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Non-Professional Section on October 9, 2026,” the FPF said.
The federation said an automatic provisional suspension had initially applied before a further suspension was imposed. The case has been designated “urgent”, with no final punishment announced and proceedings remaining confidential until the investigation concludes.
Messi also shared three emotional Instagram posts thanking Argentina following his farewell match against Benin, followed by photographs from Inter Miami’s win.
