Maharashtra leaders pay tribute to Birsa Munda on martyrdom day in Mumbai

Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended a commemorative programme in Mumbai on Tuesday to mark the martyrdom day of tribal leader and freedom fighter Birsa Munda, a prominent figure in India’s anti-colonial resistance movement.
The event was held at Lok Bhavan and brought together several senior state leaders and public representatives. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Minister Dr. Ashok Uike, Minister Narhari Zirwal and Minister of State Indranil Naik were among those present at the gathering.

During the programme, dignitaries paid tributes to Birsa Munda, who is widely remembered for mobilising tribal communities against British rule in the late nineteenth century and for advocating the rights of indigenous people. His legacy continues to hold significance across several states, particularly among tribal communities.

The observance formed part of the annual remembrance of Birsa Munda’s martyrdom day, which is marked through commemorative events, cultural programmes and discussions on tribal history and social development.

Birsa Munda remains an influential historical figure in India’s freedom movement. His efforts to challenge colonial policies and defend tribal land rights have earned him enduring recognition in public life and historical discourse.

The Mumbai programme concluded with floral tributes and participation from government representatives and other attendees, who gathered to remember his contribution to the country’s social and political history.
