Mumbai Police have registered an FIR against actor Imran Khan and others detained during a protest at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai, held in support of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) demonstration in Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the controversy surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise.
According to Mumbai Police, the FIR was registered at Gamdevi Police Station under Sections 223, relating to disobedience to an order; 126(2), concerning wrongful restraint; and 189(2), 189(3) and 189(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police personnel themselves filed the complaint.
Police said more than 400 people were detained in Mumbai during the demonstration.
Following his detention on Saturday, Imran shared a picture of himself inside a police van on social media with the humorous caption, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.”
A video of the actor saying “Jai Hind” to police personnel also went viral. In another clip, he spoke about the circumstances surrounding his detention.
“I honestly don’t know why I have been brought here. They picked all of us from the streets and asked us to sit in the vans,” he said.
Imran also revealed that he and the others were driven around in the police van for approximately two hours before being released.
Before entering the van, the Delhi Belly actor said he had no specific demands and had joined the protest simply as a citizen of Mumbai.
“Sir, I don’t have any demands. I don’t have any status to demand anything from people. Nor am I a part of any organization, so I don’t speak as a representative,” he said.
Imran’s girlfriend, Lekha Washington, and his cousin, Zayn Marie Khan, were also detained at August Kranti Maidan along with him. Both shared regular updates from inside the police van on their respective social media accounts.
