EXCLUSIVE: Suresh Raina Asked About CSK Batting Coach Role, Here’s His Reply

Chennai Super Kings have overhauled their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027 and they are still in search of a new batting coach. Michael Hussey, who worked under Stephen Fleming from 2018 to 2026, has exited the franchise and the Yellow Army needs a coach who can fill his boots.

Zaheer Khan has already taken over as CSK’s head coach while the five-time IPL Champions are in talks with Mohit Sharma over the bowling coach role. Speaking exclusively to Sports Now, Suresh Raina broke his silence about possibly joining CSK as their batting coach. “I don’t want to comment on that,” Raina responded.

Raina kicked off his IPL career with CSK in 2008 and played for CSK till 2015. He assisted MS Dhoni and led the team in his absence. He captained Gujarat Lions in IPL 2016 and 2017.

Raina returned as CSK’s vice-captain in 2018 and played for them till 2021. He surprisingly went unsold in the IPL 2022 mega-auction. Raina took up the commentary role during IPL 2022 and announced his retirement from Indian cricket later that year. Raina now works as a commentator.

The former India vice-captain hasn’t kicked off his coaching journey yet. Should Raina join CSK, it will be his first stint as the coach of an IPL franchise.

Hope Shami returns: Raina

Raina was also hopeful of Mohammed Shami making his return to Team India. Shami, who finished as the highest wicket-taker of the 2023 ODI World Cup, hasn’t played for India since the final.

“Yes, he should (on Shami’s return). It is great to see Bhuvneshwar make a comeback. Now that Bhuvi has returned, I am sure Shami will also make a comeback. He has taken a lot of wickets in first-class cricket and is a quality bowler. The way he bowled in the 2023 ODI World Cup, his consistency and performances were outstanding. He looks strong, and I hope he returns to the Indian team as well,” Raina said.

Shami is in action for Bengal in the Ranji Trophy as he continues to send a message to the selectors and the Indian team management. Ajit Agarkar’s stint as chief selector has ended and India could have a new chief selector soon. Pragyan Ojha is presently serving as the interim chief selector.
