Portuguese Football Federation Provisionally Suspends Cristiano Ronaldo

The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has provisionally suspended Cristiano Ronaldo for walking off during the national camp. FPF confirmed that it initiated disciplinary proceedings against its former captain and that he is provisionally suspended.

“Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, following a decision by the Non-Professional Section on October 9, 2026,” the federation said in a statement.

Last week, Ronaldo left the national camp during the Copenhagen training camp. “After the National Team Coach’s press conference, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I made the decision to leave the National Team camp. In due time, I will tell the truth to all Portuguese people about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, to which I have always dedicated myself. Now is the time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates, without exception,” he wrote on Instagram after exiting the camp.

The Portuguese legend didn’t play against Norway. He was part of the game against Wales and was among the substitutes for the Norway game. However, head coach Jorge Jesus didn’t utilise his services.

FPF President Pedro Proença had a discussion with Ronaldo and Jorge. However, the star footballer decided against staying with the team.

“I read the statement. And now, as I do every day, I’m going to the Federation to work, to think about the team and the Portuguese National Team. I have nothing more to say,” Jorge said after Ronaldo left the camp.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo retire?

While there is no official word on  retirement, he is confirmed to call it quits before the next World Cup. During the 2026 WC, Ronaldo said it was his last global event for Portugal.

“I’m sad to be leaving the World Cup like this. I gave it my all. I did my best and I’m leaving with a clear conscience. It was my last World Cup, yes, but I’ll now have time to reflect and be with my family. I won’t be making any rash decisions,” he said after Portugal’s exit from the WC. Ronaldo failed to lift the WC trophy for Portugal.
