Shai Hope Creates History, Joins Exclusive Club With Rare Feat vs India

West Indies captain Shai Hope made history by being the second player in history to score a century against India in all three formats (Tests, ODIs, and T20Is) on Friday, October 9. In the second T20 International of the five-match series in Ranchi, Hope began the innings for the West Indies in the 250-run chase.

On Friday, he scored an undefeated 102 runs off 45 balls to help his team reach the goal in just 18.3 overs for the loss of just four wickets.

Hope had hit one century in Tests and five in ODIs against the Men in Blue before his first T20I century against India. The only other player in the world to hit a century against India in all three forms is Shane Watson of Australia. At the end of his playing career, Watson scored one century against India in each of the Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.

Jos Buttler of England and Glenn Maxwell of Australia have both hit hundreds against India in Tests and T20Is, but not in ODIs. After Evin Lewis, Hope became just the second hitter from the West Indies to make a century in a T20I match against India. Lewis has two hundreds and has participated in nine T20Is against India. Only two batters have achieved multiple T20I hundreds against the Men in Blue, including him.

The West Indies were able to reach the 250-run target thanks to Hope’s century in the second T20I in Ranchi. It was the Men in Maroon’s most successful run chase in T20Is and the most successful run chase by any team against India in the 20-over format.

“Honestly speaking, you cannot put a number to it, because when the dew factor comes in, it plays a massive role. And even 249 was chased in, like, with two overs to spare. So you cannot give a number, or probably anticipate that, okay, this is the number we would be trying to score. [Were you searching for another bowler?] The margin for error on this wicket is very minor, and any delivery if you miss to execute it, it was going onto the stands, and you could see how exceptional they were batting. So, a few missed chances here and there, but that’s part and parcel of the game. But credit where it’s due, they batted amazing, and yeah, kudos to them,” said Shai Hope in the post-match presentation.
