September sales numbers are out, and the SUV chart has a new leader. Last month’s best-seller had to settle for a lower spot, and the gap between the top two is much smaller than you would expect. Here are the top five best-selling SUVs of September 2026.
Best-Selling SUVs: Tata Nexon

| September 2026 | August 2026 | September 2025 | |
| Sales | 20,456 units | 18,431 units | 22,573 units |
The Tata Nexon is the best-selling SUV of September 2026. It climbed from sixth place in August to second in September among the best-selling cars, with sales rising by over 2,000 units month-on-month (MoM). However, it is down 9% year-on-year (YoY). The Nexon’s biggest selling point is choice, with multiple powertrain options, including petrol, diesel and CNG. For buyers who want a compact SUV that is well-equipped and strong on safety, the Nexon is an easy pick.
Tata Punch

| September 2026 | August 2026 | September 2025 | |
| Sales | 20,333 units | 21,320 units | 15,891 units |
The Tata Punch ranks second, and just 123 units separate it from the Nexon. After topping the overall sales chart in August, the Punch slipped to third among all cars this month. Even so, it grew 28% YoY. The Punch remains one of the most affordable SUVs in the market, and it is also available with a CNG powertrain and an automatic gearbox option. That makes it a good fit for buyers who want an SUV on a tight budget.
Best-Selling SUVs: Maruti Fronx

| September 2026 | August 2026 | September 2025 | |
| Sales | 19,282 units | 18,730 units | 13,767 units |
The Maruti Fronx takes the third spot with 19,282 units. It is up both MoM and YoY, with a 40% jump compared to last year. This makes the Fronx one of Maruti’s biggest SUV growth contributors. The Fronx suits buyers who want a crossover SUV that is easy to drive in the city and backed by Maruti’s wide service network and low running costs.
Hyundai Creta

| September 2026 | August 2026 | September 2025 | |
| Sales | 17,657 units | 16,288 units | 18,861 units |
The Hyundai Creta remains in the top five, in fourth place. Sales are up by over 1,300 units from August, though it is 6% lower than September last year. The Creta remains the go-to mid-size SUV for many families. It offers a feature-loaded cabin, comfortable ride quality, and a choice of petrol and diesel engines, which keeps it relevant even as newer rivals arrive.
Best-Selling SUVs: Mahindra Scorpio

| September 2026 | August 2026 | September 2025 | |
| Sales | 17,313 units | 15,576 units | 18,372 units |
The Mahindra Scorpio (Classic and N combined) completes the top five and is also the ninth best-selling car of the month. Sales rose by over 1,700 units from August but are down 6% YoY. For buyers who want a rugged, ladder-frame SUV with go-anywhere capability, the Scorpio remains a strong choice. Its imposing road presence and diesel power keep buyers coming back, particularly in smaller towns and for highway use.
