Marnus Labuschagne Continues Search for Test Century Amidst Performance Struggles

Australian cricketer Marnus Labuschagne’s quest for a Test century remains unfulfilled as he faced challenges during the first Test of the three-match series against South Africa at Kingsmead, Durban, on October 9.

Labuschagne came to bat after Travis Head’s dismissal for 9 runs, contributing to a vital 60-run partnership with Steve Smith. He was eventually out for 37 runs off 58 balls, extending his century drought since 2023. His innings included six boundaries.

Support from Australian Management

Despite his inconsistent performances, the Australian management continues to support Labuschagne in the number three position. His selection for the series was influenced by his experience and a timely century in a warm-up match against the CSA Invitation XI.

Labuschagne’s Performance Since Last Century

Labuschagne has been a key player for Australia but has struggled to score a Test century for over three years. His last century was in July 2023, where he scored 111 runs against England in the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford.

Since then, he has played 24 matches, including the current one against South Africa, accumulating 1000 runs with an average of 25, including nine fifties. His highest score during this period was 90 against New Zealand in March 2024.

Selectors’ Decisions and Recent Form

Labuschagne’s recent exclusion from the Australian squad for the West Indies series indicates the selectors’ readiness to make tough decisions amid his ongoing slump. He aims to regain his spot by performing well in the Sheffield Shield.

In the 2025/26 home Ashes series, he scored 259 runs, averaging 28.77 over five matches. However, in the two-match Test series against Bangladesh in August, he managed only 36 runs across three innings.

Captain Cummins’ Confidence in Labuschagne

Despite his struggles, Labuschagne’s performance in the Sheffield Shield 2025/26, where he scored 525 runs in eight matches, and a century in a practice match, has kept discussions about his potential alive.

Ahead of the Durban Test, Australian captain Pat Cummins expressed strong support for Labuschagne, emphasizing his experience and ability to return to form. Cummins stated, “He doesn’t need to go searching for something that he doesn’t already have. We believe he is well-placed to succeed.”

Labuschagne’s Career Statistics

In his Test career, Marnus Labuschagne has scored a total of 4767 runs, including 11 centuries and 25 fifties, with an average of 43.73 across 118 innings in 66 matches.
