Mohun Bagan Super Giant Clinch 22nd IFA Shield Title After 1-0 Win Over East Bengal FC

Kolkata witnessed another thrilling chapter in its storied football rivalry today, October 8, 2026, as Mohun Bagan Super Giant (MBSG) edged past East Bengal FC (EBFC) 1-0 in the IFA Shield 2026 final at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium).

Bosnian midfielder Samir Zeljkovic’s decisive first-half strike proved to be the difference, allowing the Mariners to successfully defend their title and claim a record 22nd IFA Shield.

The highly anticipated ‘Kolkata Derby’ kicked off at 6:15 PM IST, delivering on its promise of high-stakes drama. The win also saw Mohun Bagan Super Giant complete a historic Calcutta Football League and IFA Shield double in the same season.

Samir Zeljkovic’s Clinical Finish Seals Victory

The lone goal of the match arrived just before the break in the 45th minute. Midfielder Sahal Abdul Samad delivered a perfectly weighted chipped ball into the East Bengal penalty box. The 29-year-old Samir Zeljkovic brought it down expertly with his chest before calmly slotting it past the East Bengal goalkeeper, Phurba Lachenpa, to break the deadlock.

East Bengal, determined to avenge their 2025 IFA Shield final defeat (which MBSG won on penalties after a 1-1 draw), pushed hard for an equalizer, especially in the second half. Mohun Bagan’s goalkeeper, Vishal Kaith, was a standout performer, producing several crucial saves to maintain his side’s slender lead. The Red & Gold Brigade came agonizingly close in the 87th minute when Dani Ramirez sent an aerial ball into the box, but Lukasz Zwolinski’s header lacked clean contact, missing a golden opportunity. Seven minutes of injury time added to the tension, but MBSG’s defense held firm until the final whistle.

Road to the Final and Season’s Rivalry

Both teams navigated challenging paths to reach the final. East Bengal FC arrived with confidence after a commanding 7-2 semi-final demolition of NorthEast United FC, with David Lalhlansanga netting a hat-trick. Mohun Bagan Super Giant, on the other hand, endured a tougher semi-final clash, overcoming Punjab FC on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes, largely thanks to the heroics of Vishal Kaith.

This IFA Shield final marked the fifth meeting between the Kolkata giants in 2026, showcasing the intense ebb and flow of their rivalry this season. East Bengal had previously triumphed over MBSG with a dominant 4-1 victory in the Durand Cup final in August, a significant win for Antonio Lopez Habas’ side. However, MBSG had started their Durand Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over East Bengal, and their Calcutta Football League encounter ended in a 1-1 draw.

Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s triumph not only secures their 22nd IFA Shield but also reasserts their dominance in a season marked by fierce derby encounters. The victory provides a significant psychological boost as both teams now look ahead to the upcoming Indian Super League season and continental commitments.
