India will look to build on their dominant start to the five-match T20I series when they meet West Indies in the second game at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Friday.
The hosts stormed to victory in the series opener in Lucknow, chasing down 171 in only 14.4 overs after Shreyas Iyer produced a stunning unbeaten 102 off 43 balls.
With a 1-0 lead in hand, India have some room to experiment, but two questions could shape their plans for the Ranchi contest: whether to persist with Sanju Samson and what to do with Mayank Yadav after an expensive outing.
Samson’s recent run with the bat has put the spotlight firmly on India’s opening combination.
The wicketkeeper-batter has scores of just 9, 7, 2 and 11 in his last four innings, and the presence of teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi gives the team a ready-made alternative if the management decides to make a change.
Sooryavanshi’s aggressive approach could add another attacking option during the powerplay, while India would still have Abhishek Sharma’s explosive batting at the top.
The bigger question is whether the management sees Samson’s recent lean patch as a temporary phase and gives the experienced batter another opportunity.
India could also consider a change in their pace attack after Mayank Yadav’s difficult outing in the opening T20I.
Mayank conceded 16 runs in his first over and finished with an expensive spell, although he did manage to dismiss West Indies’ top scorer Sherfane Rutherford, who made 56.
Naman Dhir stood out with the ball for India, taking 3-31, while Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel picked up two wickets apiece.
Nitish Kumar Reddy is another option if India want greater balance, although his use with the new ball remains something the team will have to weigh carefully.
There is little uncertainty in the middle order after Iyer’s match-winning performance in Lucknow.
The India captain’s unbeaten 102 was his first T20I century and completely took the pressure out of the chase. His innings also gave India’s batting unit an early boost in a series where the management has the opportunity to assess different combinations.
Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma and Shivam Dube provide India with further options, while the squad also includes younger players such as Sooryavanshi and Prince Yadav.
West Indies need more from their batting
West Indies will need a stronger start if they are to level the series in Ranchi.
Shai Hope and Rutherford both scored half-centuries in the opening game, but the visitors lost three wickets during the powerplay before the pair steadied the innings.
Their middle order will need to produce more consistently against an Indian attack that found control through spin. Kuldeep and Axar operated effectively together, while Dhir’s off-spin added another option.
A better start against India’s bowlers could be crucial for West Indies if they are to put enough pressure on the hosts.
What to expect at the Ranchi venue
The JSCA International Stadium Complex has slightly favoured teams chasing in T20 cricket. Four of the seven matches played at the venue have been won by the side batting second, while three have gone to teams setting a target.
The average first-innings score at the ground is 138, compared with 111 in the second innings.
There have also been some sizeable totals in Ranchi. India’s 196/6 against Sri Lanka remains the highest T20 score at the venue, while New Zealand’s 155/3 against India is the highest successful chase.
The surface is expected to offer a firm base for batting, with some grass potentially helping the new-ball bowlers early in the innings.
For India, Friday’s match is about more than simply taking a 2-0 lead. With the series advantage already secured, the management can use the contest to assess players and combinations ahead of a busy T20I schedule.
For West Indies, the task is more immediate. They need a response after the heavy defeat in Lucknow and will be hoping their top order can give the bowlers a more competitive total to defend.
The Ranchi contest could therefore offer an early indication of whether India stick with their winning combination or use their advantage to test the depth of their squad.
