‘Does not indicate any decision’ – ACB clarifies Naveen-ul-Haq’s commentary role

The Afghanistan Cricket Board has clarified that fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq’s inclusion in the official broadcasting panel for the one-off Test against Bangladesh does not represent a shift in his playing career status.

Naveen has been included in the commentary panel for the Test scheduled for October 9-13 at Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi, but remains absent from Afghanistan’s squad for the match. The board’s statement addresses speculation about the player’s future following his prolonged absence from international cricket.

ACB Chief Executive Naseeb Khan explained the reasoning behind Naveen’s commentary involvement and his current status within the team’s plans. Khan emphasised that the player’s rehabilitation from injury remains the priority and that his broadcasting role serves a dual purpose during his recovery period.

“Naveen is currently recovering from an injury and his rehabilitation process is ongoing. His priority at this stage is to complete his rehabilitation and return to cricket fully fit. His involvement in the commentary panel should not be interpreted as a decision regarding his playing career. Naveen remains part of our plans as a player, and once he completes his rehabilitation, he will be available for the team,” Khan said, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

Naveen has not played for Afghanistan since December 14, 2024, when he featured in a T20 International against Zimbabwe. He was part of Afghanistan’s squad for the recently-concluded T20 International series against India but was not selected in the playing XI. In his international career, Naveen has played 63 white-ball matches but has not made a Test debut.

Board emphasises talent development across multiple cricket areas

The Afghanistan Cricket Board views Naveen’s commentary assignment as part of a broader strategy to develop talent across multiple areas of the sport. Khan outlined the board’s commitment to building capacity in broadcasting and other cricket-related fields beyond playing roles.

“At the same time, we see value in giving opportunities to potential individuals in different areas of the game, including commentary,” Khan said.

The commentary panel for the Test against Bangladesh includes Ramiz Raja, Andrew Leonard, Farveez Maharoof, Ahmad Farhad Fidai, Mazhar Uddin, and Naveen-ul-Haq. The inclusion of the Afghanistan fast bowler alongside established commentators reflects the board’s confidence in his ability to contribute to the broadcasting coverage while he completes his rehabilitation.
