New Delhi: It was a regular Monday afternoon when many people in India tried to log in to ChatGPT only to find error screens and half-loaded conversations. By 1:04 PM IST, reports of an outage started appearing on Downdetector, the site that tracks internet service disruptions. The chatbot, which many rely on for work and study, suddenly stopped working smoothly.
For some, the app froze on the login page. Others said that even when the chatbot opened, it refused to generate replies or took minutes to respond. We tried refreshing a conversation ourselves and experienced no service outage; however, some other teams in the office were experiencing issues, confirming what many others were already sharing online.
Outage details reported by users
According to Downdetector’s live outage map, nearly 82 percent of users complained of issues with ChatGPT directly. Another 12 percent said the web version was failing, while 6 percent noted problems with the mobile app. The platform’s outage graph showed how reports shot up from almost none to more than 770 in less than an hour.
People on forums and social platforms echoed the same frustration. One common error mentioned was “error in message stream,” while others pointed out delays so long that they gave up mid-chat. Many users also complained that ongoing conversations would not refresh at all.
No word yet from OpenAI
As of writing this article, OpenAI has not commented on the cause of the disruption. The company’s official status page still shows everything as operational, including ChatGPT, its API, and Sora. That mismatch only added to the confusion among users. The silence on social media from the company has left many guessing about what went wrong.
