Smriti Mandhana has been appointed the new full-time white-ball captain of the Indian women’s cricket team, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur, whose tenure as captain ended on Tuesday, the BCCI announced.
Mandhana, who has been part of the Indian side since 2013, brings extensive international experience and a strong leadership record in domestic and franchise cricket. She most recently guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to Women’s Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026.
The 29-year-old has previously captained India in 18 T20Is and four ODIs. She will now lead the team as it enters a new phase while building on its recent progress.
“To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour. Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply,” Mandhana said. She thanked the BCCI, selectors, teammates and supporters for their trust and acknowledged Harmanpreet’s contribution as captain.
BCCI President Mithun Manhas congratulated Mandhana and said her experience, game awareness and leadership qualities would be valuable to the team. “The BCCI has full confidence in Smriti, and I am sure she will approach this role with the same commitment and professionalism that she has shown throughout her career,” he said.
BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia also congratulated Mandhana, highlighting her experience and successful leadership of RCB in the WPL. He said she had the “experience and temperament” required to take on the responsibility of leading India.
Mandhana will now spearhead the Indian women’s white-ball side as the team begins a new chapter under her leadership.
