Rashmika Mandanna is gearing up to play the legendary Carnatic singer and classical vocalist in her upcoming biopic titled M.S – A Legacy on Screen. For the Chennai launch of the movie, Mandanna wore an orange and purple Kanchipuram silk sari, inspired by the artist who famously wore them for her on-stage performances.
Mandanna’s sari, from Hyderabad-based label Sutrani is a singular creation in the town of Kanchipuram. The sari’s purple body is covered with intricate grids, with diminutive dots in the centre; while orange banded frames the sari on both sides and brings out the contrast. The orange extends into the pallu of the sari, woven with traditional Kanchipuram motifs with gold zari. She doubled down on the traditional look with an ivory puff-sleeved blouse in mashru, scattered with tiny gold motifs.
For accessories, stylist Neeraja Kona went with gold jewellery—with gold earrings linked to kaan chains, a gold necklace with floral motifs, gold bracelets, and gold hair accessories that brought the look together.
Her hair style and makeup felt like a natural extension of her traditional look. The actor’s hair was tied into a braid while her barely-there makeup drove the point home with a tiny red bindi, kohl-rimmed eyes and a nude lip, keeping it understated and classic.
The whole look was inspired by the icon she’s playing, and that’s apt for a woman who had a colour named after her. MS Blue, an inky, iridescent shade, was used in saris woven specially for the singer. This outfit proves that a sari can be bold and still look sophisticated and classy.
