Michael Bracewell Chooses Casual Contract with Black Caps for BBL Opportunity

All-rounder Michael Bracewell has opted for a casual playing contract with the Black Caps, stepping away from the central contract list to pursue a chance in Australia’s Big Bash League (BBL), as reported by the ICC. Nick Kelly, a left-handed batter, has been named as his successor.

Recent Trends in Player Contracts

Mark Chapman made a similar choice last month, also opting for a casual contract for the 2026/27 season. Other New Zealand players, including Finn Allen, Lockie Ferguson, Adam Milne, and Tim Seifert, have previously taken this route.

Bracewell’s Commitment to the Team

Despite this change in contract status, Bracewell remains available for the upcoming home white-ball series against India. The 35-year-old aims to increase his total of 105 international appearances.

Bracewell expressed gratitude for the support from New Zealand Cricket in pursuing this opportunity at this point in his career. He emphasized that, as a player focused solely on white-ball formats, this was an opportunity he couldn’t refuse. He reassured fans of his commitment to the Black Caps and the upcoming series against India, stating, “The backing from New Zealand Cricket for me to take this opportunity at this stage of my career means a lot. I’m still very much committed to the Black Caps and can’t wait to be involved in the upcoming India tour and future white-ball series.”

Praise for Nick Kelly from the Coach

New Zealand’s coach, Rob Walter, commended Nick Kelly for earning his first full-time contract, highlighting his consistent domestic performances and dedication. Walter noted that players debuting later in their careers often possess greater self-awareness and confidence under pressure. He remarked, “Nick’s been a standout performer in domestic cricket for several seasons now, and it’s testament to his hard work that he’s earned this first contract at this stage of his career. Introducing players like Nick to international cricket a bit later certainly has its advantages in terms of the player knowing their game and being able to trust themselves to perform under pressure.”

List of Centrally Contracted Players

The current centrally contracted players for the New Zealand men’s team include: Tom Blundell, Devon Conway, Jacob Duffy, Matt Fisher, Zak Foulkes, Mitchell Hay, Matt Henry, Kyle Jamieson, Tom Latham, Nick Kelly, Daryl Mitchell, Henry Nicholls, Will O’Rourke, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, Mitchell Santner, Ben Sears, Nathan Smith, Blair Tickner, and Will Young.
