India Hit With ICC Punishment After 5-Wicket Loss To West Indies

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has penalised both the Indian cricket team and the West Indies side for maintaining slow over rates in the third and final ODI of the three-match series which took place at PCA International Cricket Stadium, Ground A in New Chandigarh.

India was found to be four overs short of their required over rate after time allowances were taken into account, while the Caribbeans were two overs short, according to a statement released by the cricket governing body on Monday, October 5.

“India have been fined 20 per cent of their match fee, while West Indies have been fined 10 per cent after being ruled four and two overs short of their required over rates respectively, once time allowances were taken into consideration,” the ICC stated in a release.

“Prakash Bhatt of the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanctions. Both captains pleaded guilty to the offences and accepted the proposed sanctions, meaning there was no need for formal hearings. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sam Nogajski, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid and fourth umpire Virender Sharma,” the release added.

India captain   chose to bat first in the third ODI, and the hosts scored 351/7 in 50 overs thanks to KL Rahul’s undefeated 129 and Rohit Sharma’s 92.

The West Indies chased down the massive mark of 352 in 48.2 overs for the loss of just five wickets, led by captain Shai Hope’s 162-run effort from 143 balls. In addition to Hope, the visitors’ No. 3 batsman Amir Jangoo got a half-century, and their No. 5 batsman Keemo Paul also scored more than 40 runs.

will now play the West Indies in a five-match T20I series after the ODI series concludes. The T20I series is set to begin in Lucknow on October 6. Around eight players have joined the team in India specifically for the T20I matches, and Hope will be leading the two-time T20 World Cup winners.
