Anupam Kher Says New York Made Him ‘Feel Like a Student Again’, Enriched His Acting Journey

Veteran actor Anupam Kher has reflected on his special connection with New York, saying the city renewed his curiosity about acting and made him “feel like a student again” despite decades of experience in the profession.

Currently in New York with his musical play Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane, Kher revisited memories of the three years he spent in the city while working on the television series New Amsterdam. In a post on Instagram, the actor shared a video of his arrival and spoke about how the experience had enriched his professional journey.

“Landed in New York! And so many beautiful memories came rushing back! I spent three wonderful years here working on #NewAmsterdam series. At a stage in my life when I had already spent so many years acting, this city made me feel like a student again—learning, discovering, and finding joy in something new every day,” Kher wrote.

The 71-year-old actor also drew a comparison between New York and Mumbai, saying both cities have a distinctive energy and rhythm that make them feel familiar.

“Walking these streets feels familiar. The energy, the people, the constant movement… somewhere, it reminds me of Mumbai. Both cities seem to have a heartbeat of their own, and somehow you find yourself keeping pace with it!” he shared.

Kher said he was looking forward to performing in New York with Jaane Pehchaane Anjaane, expressing excitement about creating new memories in a city closely associated with his past.

The actor is currently touring North America with the musical play, which explores human relationships and connections in a modern middle-class setting.
