Shai Hope’s Record-Breaking 162 Leads West Indies to Historic ODI Victory Over India

In a remarkable display of batting, West Indies captain Shai Hope scored an impressive 162 runs, marking the highest individual score by a West Indies player in a successful ODI chase.

This achievement propelled his team to a significant five-wicket victory against India in the third and final ODI held on Saturday.

Hope’s unbeaten innings of 162 runs off 143 deliveries included 17 boundaries and three sixes, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous record of 162 runs against England in 2019.

Multiple Records Broken by Hope

At 31 years old, Hope became the first West Indies player to score over 150 runs in a successful ODI chase against India. His score also set a new record for the highest individual score by any player in an ODI chase against India, eclipsing the previous best of 160 runs by Tillakaratne Dilshan in 2009.

Hope’s achievement marked his eighth ODI century as a wicketkeeper-captain, the most in this format, with MS Dhoni and AB de Villiers trailing behind. Additionally, he reached his 21st ODI century in just 152 innings, tying for the third-fastest milestone alongside Quinton de Kock and David Warner.

West Indies Achieve Historic Chase

Hope’s record-setting performance came during a chase of 352 runs, leading the West Indies to their highest successful run chase in ODI history. After an early wicket of John Campbell, Hope partnered with Amir Jangoo, who contributed 67 runs off 56 balls, to stabilize the innings.

Following Jangoo’s exit, Sherfane Rutherford and Keemo Paul added valuable runs, with Paul scoring 44 off 35 balls. Gudakesh Motie then joined Hope, forming a crucial fifth-wicket partnership of 62 runs in just 29 balls, helping the team reach 352 runs in 48.2 overs, finishing the chase with 10 balls remaining.
