Actress Ravee Gupta has disagreed with actor Rohit Roy’s description of television as a “dustbin medium”, saying she deeply respects her work and would not use such a term for the industry.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Gupta said she had not read Roy’s interview but believed he must have had reasons for making the remark. She acknowledged that every profession has its shortcomings, which may have influenced his perspective.
“I could never use that word because I really respect my work,” Gupta said.
Commenting on Roy’s statement, she said, “There must be a point of view. I haven’t read his interview, but I have definitely heard about it. I don’t think he said anything just for sensationalism. He must have had his reasons. He had a perspective, and that is why he said what he said.”
She added, “In every profession, there are definitely some negative or disappointing things. Maybe that was the reason behind his comment. But personally, I don’t agree with it.”
Roy made the remark during his recent appearance on the Kindle Cast YouTube channel, where he was asked whether the television industry had become more professional but had lost some of its devotion to the craft.
Responding to the question, Roy described television as a “dustbin medium”, arguing that much of its content is quickly forgotten and that repetitive programming has left little room for creativity.
“This question has been asked of me several times, and I sometimes feel that I shouldn’t come across as ungrateful. But, television is a dustbin medium. You watch it today, it’s like yesterday’s newspaper. Tomorrow, you forget about it,” he said.
Roy also expressed concern over the volume of content being produced in India and the repetition of similar storylines, saying that there was hardly any creativity in the industry.
His comments drew criticism from several people in the television industry, prompting debate about the quality of content, creative freedom and the evolving nature of television.
