Tribute – Jackie Shroff remembers SD Burman and Majrooh Sultanpuri

Veteran actor Jackie Shroff remembered legendary composer SD Burman and celebrated lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri on their birth anniversaries through a pair of musical tributes shared on social media. Shroff posted archival monochrome images of both artists on his Instagram Stories and paired them with songs associated with their remarkable contributions to Hindi cinema.

Jackie Shroff remembers SD Burman

For SD Burman’s birth anniversary, Shroff shared a black-and-white photograph of the composer, who was affectionately known as Sachin Karta and Burman Dada. Alongside the image, the actor wrote a short message remembering Burman and selected “Khoya Khoya Chand” from the 1960 film Kala Bazar as the accompanying music.

Burman came from the royal family of Tripura and began his career in Bengali cinema in the 1930s. He later moved into Hindi films and became one of the most influential composers of Indian film music.

His compositions were performed by many of the most prominent playback singers of the era, including Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Mohammed Rafi, Geeta Dutt, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle, Hemant Kumar, Shamshad Begum, Mukesh and Talat Mahmood.

Burman also recorded songs as a singer

SD Burman was not only a composer. He also lent his voice to film songs, recording 14 Hindi and 13 Bengali songs during his career.

Among the many songs associated with his work, “Badi Sooni Sooni Hai”, sung by Kishore Kumar for the film Mili, was part of his final period. According to the information provided, Burman fell into a coma after a rehearsal connected with the song and died in 1975 after remaining unconscious for several days.

A second tribute for Majrooh Sultanpuri

Shroff also remembered Urdu poet and lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri. He shared a photograph of Sultanpuri with the dates October 1, 1919 to May 24, 2000 and accompanied the tribute with “Teri Aankhon Ke Siva”, from the 1969 film Chirag.

Sultanpuri was a major presence in Hindi film songwriting, particularly during the 1950s and early 1960s. His work extended across numerous film soundtracks, while his literary career also established him as an important Urdu poet.

Sultanpuri’s contribution to Urdu literature

Majrooh Sultanpuri was associated with the Progressive Writers’ Movement and became one of the recognised literary voices of 20th-century Urdu poetry. His writing combined literary expression with the demands of popular cinema, helping create songs that remained part of the Hindi film music tradition.

His career in cinema spanned several decades, and his lyrics were associated with numerous successful films and composers.

Sultanpuri died in 2000

According to the information provided, Sultanpuri had been suffering from a lung-related illness before developing severe pneumonia. He died in 2000 at the age of 80.

By choosing songs connected to both artists, Jackie Shroff’s social media tributes highlighted two different but closely connected aspects of Indian cinema: Burman’s contribution as a composer and musician, and Sultanpuri’s lasting legacy as a poet and lyricist.
