Actress Yami Gautam says the unpredictability of her character Mohini in the upcoming entertainer Nayyi Navelli was one of the main reasons she was drawn to the role.
The makers, Amazon MGM Studios and Colour Yellow, unveiled the trailer of the film on Wednesday, offering a glimpse into its mix of family drama, humour, fantasy and action.
Talking about her character, Yami said, “What drew me to Mohini is that she is never quite what you expect. There’s a warmth and familiarity to her, but also a mystery that slowly reveals itself.”
“Nayyi Navelli gave me the opportunity to explore a character that moves seamlessly between family, humour, emotion, fantasy and action, while still staying rooted at heart,” she added.
Yami also described working with producer Aanand L Rai, writer Himanshu Sharma, director Balaji Mohan, Colour Yellow and Amazon MGM Studios as a “wonderful experience”.
“I’m really excited for audiences to meet Mohini this Dussehra and discover her for themselves,” she said.
Set in Meerut, the film follows the Awasthi family as they welcome Mohini, their seemingly perfect new daughter-in-law. What begins with familiar wedding rituals soon takes an unexpected turn as questions emerge about the new member of the family.
Director Balaji Mohan said the film’s appeal lies in beginning with a relatable family before taking the story in an unexpected direction.
“What makes Nayyi Navelli special to me is that it starts with a family that feels instantly relatable, with all the quirks, opinions and madness you’d recognise from any family, and then takes things somewhere completely unexpected that will leave you pleasantly surprised,” he said.
Backed by Aanand L Rai and Himanshu Sharma, Nayyi Navelli is being presented as a fantasy family entertainer.
The film is written by Himanshu Sharma and Divy Nidhi Sharma, with music composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar.
Nayyi Navelli is scheduled to release in theatres on October 16, ahead of Dussehra.
