Sumit Nagal advanced to the men’s singles quarterfinals at the Asian Games 2026 with a commanding straight-sets victory over Uzbekistan’s Sergey Fomin on Wednesday, while India’s other singles entrant Dhakshineswar Suresh bowed out in the third round.
Nagal, who had entered the third round after defeating South Korea’s Seongchan Hong 6-4, 6-0, continued his impressive run at the Higashiyama Park Tennis Center. The Indian produced a composed performance to beat Fomin 6-3, 6-2 and book his place in the last eight.
The victory marks another positive step for Nagal, who came into the Asian Games after a difficult Davis Cup outing against South Korea. The former world No. 68 showed his ability to adapt and regain momentum in Aichi-Nagoya.
Nagal had earlier been forced to negotiate challenging conditions against Hong. Their second-round match was interrupted by weather and completed over two days, but Nagal responded strongly after falling behind on resumption, winning nine consecutive games to close out the contest.
His quarterfinal opponent will be China’s Wu Yibing, a silver medallist from the 2018 Asian Games.
Meanwhile, Dhakshineswar Suresh’s singles campaign came to an end in the third round. After receiving a first-round bye, Suresh had beaten Indonesia’s Gunawan Trismuwantara 7-5, 7-6(2) in the second round to reach the pre-quarterfinals.
Suresh subsequently faced Chinese Taipei’s Tseng Chun-hsin in the third round and suffered defeat, ending his hopes of a singles medal. He had nevertheless made an encouraging Asian Games debut by reaching the last 16.
