The Indian automotive landscape is poised for a significant transformation with Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari’s confirmation that the Toyota Innova Hycross Flex-Fuel Hybrid will make its commercial debut in October. The Minister, who has been a vocal proponent of alternative fuels, stated that he has received an invitation to the launch event, highlighting the vehicle’s capability to run entirely on 100% ethanol (E100).
Toyota Kirloskar Motor had first unveiled a prototype of the Innova Hycross-based electrified flex-fuel vehicle in August 2023. This groundbreaking model is designed to operate with ethanol blends, including pure ethanol, and is touted as the world’s first BS-VI (Stage-II) compliant hybrid vehicle capable of running on E100 fuel, as per a by NDTV.
Key Specifications and Eco-Friendly Innovations
The Toyota Innova Hycross Flex-Fuel Hybrid (FFV-SHEV) integrates a 2.0-litre TNGA 5th Generation self-charging strong-hybrid electric architecture. This powertrain has been specifically optimised to handle pure ethanol configurations up to E100. While the standard petrol-hybrid Innova Hycross produces a combined output of 184 PS, the flex-fuel variant is expected to deliver a similar power output of 186 PS for the combined hybrid system. The engine’s torque output is maintained at 188 Nm, with the electric motor contributing 206 Nm.
To ensure durability and optimal performance with ethanol, Toyota has incorporated comprehensively updated powertrain internal metal membranes, corrosion-resistant fuel lines, smart chemical ethanol sensors, advanced multi-point fuel injectors, and hard-anodized piston components designed to counteract the corrosive nature of bio-ethanol.
Running Costs and Efficiency Claims
Minister Gadkari has made a notable claim regarding the running costs of the upcoming flex-fuel Innova Hycross, suggesting it could be equivalent to petrol priced at around ₹25 per litre. It’s important to clarify that this refers to the effective cost of running the vehicle per kilometre, not the retail price of ethanol, which has yet to be specified.
Furthermore, Gadkari mentioned that the vehicle is designed to generate 60% electricity while running. Toyota’s strong-hybrid system allows the vehicle to operate in electric mode for approximately 60% of the time and cover about 40% of the distance under specific test conditions, thereby improving fuel efficiency. The flex-fuel variant is anticipated to offer an impressive fuel efficiency of around 23.24 kmpl, potentially surpassing its hybrid counterpart.
Features and Market Impact
While specific variant details for the flex-fuel model are awaited, it is expected to retain the premium features of the current Innova Hycross. These include a panoramic glass skylight system, multi-power ventilated front seats, second-row ottoman sliding recliners, an immersive 9-speaker JBL cinema acoustics package, a centralised 25.4cm smart display hub, and the comprehensive Toyota Safety Sense ADAS protection matrix.
This launch aligns with India’s broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuel imports and promote cleaner energy sources. Maruti Suzuki also recently launched the WagonR Bioflex in June 2026, capable of running on ethanol-petrol blends from E20 to E100. The introduction of the Toyota Innova Hycross Flex-Fuel Hybrid is seen as a pivotal step towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious automotive future for India.
As of now, Toyota has not officially announced the commercial pricing or specific on-sale dates for the Innova Hycross Flex-Fuel Hybrid. However, current Innova Hycross strong-hybrid models range from approximately ₹26.76 lakh to ₹31.84 lakh (ex-showroom). A “Prototype” price of ₹32.50 lakh (ex-showroom) has been mentioned in some reports for the unveiled prototype, but the official launch price for the production model is yet to be confirmed.
