Sports Bulletin September 28: India add 7 more Medals, Virat Kohli stars vs West Indies, Mbappe Injured

India enjoyed another eventful day at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, adding a seven-medal haul on Sunday as the country’s overall tally reached 37. Athletics and squash provided the biggest highlights, with Ancy Sojan and the Indian squash contingent producing memorable performances, while Tejaswin Shankar added another medal to his Asian Games collection.

India also assured itself of further boxing medals through multiple semifinal berths.

Away from the Asian Games, Indian cricket produced another headline-making performance. Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill smashed centuries as India chased down West Indies’ 296-run target with eight wickets to spare. Check out the top stories in the Bulletin for September 28.

1. India Add Seven Medals at Asian Games, Tally Reaches 37

India collected seven medals on Day 8 of the Asian Games, taking the country’s tally to 37 – four gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze. Athletics and squash accounted for the bulk of the day’s success. Sarvesh Kushare created history with a Silver medal as India secured its first High Jump medal in 56 years. Alongside the individual medal winners, India also secured three more boxing medals after Ankush Panghal, Parveen Hooda and Narender Berwal advanced to their respective semifinals.

2. Ancy Sojan Wins Silver in Women’s Long Jump

Ancy Sojan produced a 6.53m effort to win silver in the women’s long jump final. She narrowly missed gold by just two centimetres after China’s Huang Yingying jumped 6.55m. Tan Mengyi took bronze with 6.46m, while India’s Shaili Singh finished fourth at 6.42m. The medal marked another major Asian Games achievement for Ancy, who continued India’s strong showing in athletics.

3. Anahat Singh, Abhay Singh Take Squash Singles Silver

India missed out on squash singles gold but secured two silver medals through Anahat Singh and Abhay Singh. Anahat, 18, became the first Indian woman to reach the Asian Games squash singles final before losing 11-4, 11-4, 11-7 to Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam. Abhay also finished runner-up after losing to Malaysia’s Ng Eain Yow. Both Malaysian players completed a singles gold-medal sweep.

4. Tejaswin Shankar Adds Decathlon Bronze

Tejaswin Shankar secured bronze in the men’s decathlon with 7,934 points, adding another Asian Games medal to his collection. The Indian won the concluding 1,500m event in 4:33.09 but could not move higher overall. Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won gold with 8,123 points, while China’s Chen Xinghua took silver with 8,012. Tejaswin had won silver at the previous Asian Games.

5. Kohli, Gill Centuries Power India Past West Indies

Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill produced magnificent centuries as India defeated West Indies by eight wickets in the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram. West Indies posted 295/7, led by Justin Greaves’ 101, but India raced to 300/2 in only 41.4 overs. Gill made 110 from 108 balls, while Kohli remained unbeaten on 139 from just 88 deliveries as India took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

6. Virat Kohli Equals Two Sachin Tendulkar Records

Kohli’s unbeaten 139 was significant beyond the match result. The century took him to 60 List-A hundreds, equalling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 60. Remarkably, Kohli reached the mark in 338 innings compared to Tendulkar’s 538. The hundred also took Kohli level with Tendulkar for 42 international centuries on home soil. Kohli additionally became only the second batter after Tendulkar to cross 15,000 ODI runs.

7. Spain Come From Behind to Beat England 3-2

World champions Spain began their Nations League campaign with a thrilling 3-2 comeback win over England at Wembley. Lamine Yamal put Spain ahead inside two minutes, but Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane turned the match around before half-time. Alex Baena restored parity after the break before Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner in the 74th minute. Kane also missed a second-half penalty as Spain extended their unbeaten run to 39 matches.

8. Kylian Mbappe Ruled Out After Knee Injury

Kylian Mbappe’s international break has been disrupted by a knee injury suffered during France’s 1-0 Nations League win over TÜrkiye. Real Madrid confirmed that the forward has suffered a hyperextension of the posterior capsule of his left knee. Mbappe scored France’s only goal before being forced off. France coach Zinedine Zidane said the team would not take risks with the captain during the upcoming Nations League fixtures.
